Seventy years ago on a dark moonless night over 500,000 men from Allied nations made out across the cold waste of the English channel to stop a political evil that had spread across the whole of Europe and threatened the rest of the World. Many would never return but would forever lay in a foreign field. These and those that were injured or made it through must never be forgotten.
Seventy years on many thousands returned to commemorate those men and not forgetting the women, children and animals who played their part in overcoming this evil. Included in this group were Veterans of the campaign, who, though now frail, make the enormous effort to return to remember their fallen comrades.
Within these many thousands a group of sailors from the Royal Naval Sailing Association and the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve remade the same journey from the South and South East coast of England and were joined by other sailors from members of Her Majesty's Armed forces. It is to those people of seventy years ago that we returned to OUISTREHAM, FRANCE to commemorate you and never forget what you did for our freedom.
